1 man shot dead by hitmen inside his vehicle due to ambush in Peru

A 42-year-old man was assassinated in broad daylight on Saturday when two gunmen opened fire on his vehicle in the southern zone of Callao, firing more than 20 rounds in a targeted attack.

Jonathan Márquez Huamaní was sitting inside his parked gray Mazda CX-5 (license plate CTU-377) on the sixth block of Jirón Guisse, near the beach circuit and Mar Brava area, around 2:00 p.m. when the assault occurred. According to police and witness accounts, a car pulled up nearby. Two men got out, positioned themselves on either side of the Mazda, and unleashed a barrage of gunfire before fleeing the scene.

Residents reported hearing at least 15 shots. Forensic teams later recovered 21 shell casings from both sides of the street. Many of the bullets struck the vehicle’s windows and bodywork, with several aimed at face height. The area lacks security cameras, complicating the investigation.

Neighbors rushed to help and transported Márquez Huamaní to the Hospital Nacional Daniel Alcides Carrión. He died from his injuries, either en route or shortly after arrival.

Criminalistics specialists from the Peruvian National Police (PNP) secured the scene, marked dozens of bullet impacts on the vehicle with evidence tags, and collected ballistic evidence. Representatives from the Public Ministry are also on site as investigations continue. No arrests have been reported, and authorities have not yet publicly confirmed a motive, though the precision and intensity of the attack point to a targeted killing.

The incident adds to ongoing concerns about violent crime in Callao.
