17 patrons shot dead by gunmen at a local tavern in South Africa

Gauteng police have launched a manhunt for eight unidentified armed men after a deadly shooting at a tavern in Extension 3, Wedela, on the West Rand, left 17 people dead and 15 injured.

The attack occurred on Saturday, 26 September 2026, at approximately 21:30. According to police, patrons were drinking both inside and outside the tavern when the suspects arrived and opened fire on those outside. The gunmen then entered the premises and continued shooting at people inside.

The suspects were reportedly armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols. They allegedly searched some patrons and stole their cellphones before fleeing the scene in two unidentified vehicles. Two vehicles were also set alight during the incident.

A total of 17 people — 13 males and four females — were shot and killed. Emergency Medical Services declared all 17 victims dead at the scene. Fifteen others sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to medical facilities for treatment.

Police have opened 17 counts of murder, 15 counts of attempted murder, and two counts of malicious damage to property. The motive for the attack remains unknown.

Gauteng police have mobilised detectives and specialised units to track down and arrest the suspects. No arrests have been made so far, and investigations are ongoing.
