2 people killed by a gunman targeting a three-wheeler in Sri Lanka

Two people have been killed and another left in critical condition after unidentified gunmen opened fire in the Halpatota (Halpathota) area of Baddegama this morning.

According to the Police Media Division, assailants travelling in a car used a T-56 assault rifle to attack a three-wheeler in which a man and two women were travelling. The victims had reportedly been returning after appearing at the Galle Crime Division in Baddegama to provide statements or signatures.

The three-wheeler driver died at the scene or shortly after admission to hospital. One of the injured women later succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment. The second woman remains in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Galle National Hospital (Karapitiya). The deceased woman was reportedly a resident of Ambalangoda.

Police said the gunmen blocked the three-wheeler on the road before opening fire and then fled the scene. CCTV footage has captured parts of the incident, showing a gunman exiting a car and firing at the moving three-wheeler.

Two police teams have been deployed to investigate the shooting and identify those responsible. Further investigations are ongoing under the Baddegama Police Division.
