4 killed in a fierce gun battle during an anti-mining raid in Peru
The Peruvian National Police (PNP) carried out two major operations against criminal organizations linked to illegal mining, resulting in multiple arrests, significant seizures of weapons, and a deadly confrontation in the Amazon region.
The results were announced by Interior Minister Cรฉsar Astudillo and PNP Commander General Fredy Lรณpez.
In the first operation targeting the group known as โLos Lobos II,โ police conducted 13 raids across five regions following intelligence work by the forceโs Environmental Directorate. Five suspects linked to the organization were detained. Authorities seized firearms, ammunition, approximately 70,000 Peruvian soles (about $18,700), technological equipment, and other items of investigative interest.
The second operation focused on โLos Guardianes de La Pampaโ in the Madre de Dios region, a known hotspot for illegal gold mining. Police confiscated 15 rifles, one pistol, two grenades, and ammunition, significantly weakening the groupโs firepower.
During the confrontation with this organization, three suspected criminals were killed. Tragically, one police officer died in the line of duty, and a technician was wounded in the same incident.
The Ministry of the Interior described the actions as a โblowโ against organizations tied to illegal mining, which has long been associated with environmental destruction, organized crime, and violence in Peruโs Amazon and other mining areas.
