7 citizens killed in Saudi airstrikes on a busy Taiz market in Yemen

Yemen’s Houthi-run health ministry said on Sunday, September 27, 2026, that seven people were killed and 40 others injured, including children, in a strike that hit shops at a market in the Mawiya (Mawiyah) junction in Taiz province.

The ministry condemned what it described as a “horrific crime” by Saudi aircraft that deliberately targeted civilian commercial sites in the area through multiple strikes on shops in the economic institution market.

Yemen’s internationally recognised government later gave a different account, saying its forces had targeted a Houthi military camp and vehicles at the same junction. Three military sources within the government told Reuters that Houthi militants had recently established a military camp near the market.

The competing claims could not be independently verified. The incident occurred amid renewed fighting in Yemen’s long-running conflict.
