Odessa police detain suspect in shooting death of serviceman in Ukraine

Police in Odesa have arrested a pensioner suspected of fatally shooting a 50-year-old military serviceman on a busy roadway early Wednesday morning.

Patrol officers discovered the victim’s body with gunshot wounds in the middle of Lustdorfska Road next to a Chevrolet vehicle during a routine patrol on the morning of 30 September 2026.

Investigators quickly identified and detained the suspect. Officers recovered the alleged murder weapon, spent cartridge cases and other physical evidence, all of which have been sent for forensic examination.

The Odesa regional police investigation department has charged the man with intentional murder and illegal handling of weapons under Ukraine’s Criminal Code. He faces a lengthy prison sentence if convicted. Prosecutors are currently seeking a pre-trial detention order from the court.

Authorities said multiple possible motives are being examined as the investigation continues. The case is being supervised by the Odesa Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

The operation involved patrol police, investigators, operatives and forensic specialists from the Odesa district police and the regional criminal investigation units.
