Assam Rifles soldier killed in a cross-border insurgent attack, India

An Assam Rifles jawan was killed and four others injured on Tuesday morning, September 29, 2026, when a patrol team came under suspected militant fire along the India-Myanmar border in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh.

The attack occurred around 6:30 a.m. near Nampong Nallah under the Nampong circle. Personnel of the 21 Assam Rifles were patrolling an area where border fencing work is underway when suspected militants opened fire. The deceased has been identified as Havildar Jangkhokai (also reported as Jankhokai) Kuki, aged 42. The injured personnel were evacuated for medical treatment; their condition was not immediately known.

Preliminary reports have pointed to the possible involvement of militants from the NSCN (K-YA) faction, though officials have not confirmed the attackers’ identities. Security forces have intensified operations and launched search and combing efforts in the area following the incident.

The Assam Rifles paid tribute to the fallen soldier on its official X account. Director General Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM, and all ranks of the force offered solemn tributes and deep condolences to the family of Hav Jangkhokai Kuki, who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. The force stated that it stands firmly with the bereaved family.

The India-Myanmar border in Changlang remains sensitive due to the presence and movement of insurgent groups. The attack took place amid ongoing efforts to fence the border, a measure that has faced opposition from some groups concerned about restricted cross-border movement.
