2 people killed by Russian drone attacks in the Kyiv region, Ukraine
Russian forces conducted widespread attacks across Ukraine throughout the night and into the morning of September 28, 2026, striking residential areas, critical infrastructure, and civilian sites in several regions, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
In Kharkiv, a high-rise apartment building was heavily damaged, with the second and fourth floors partially destroyed. The strike there injured 28 people, including nine children. In the Kyiv region, two people were killed, one of them a citizen of Azerbaijan. Zelenskyy expressed condolences to the victims’ families.
Kyiv itself suffered damage from drone attacks that hit residential buildings, communications infrastructure, and gas stations. Attackers also wrecked a café and attempted to set fire to a food market in the capital.
Other reported impacts included:
- A vessel flying the flag of Palau struck in the Odesa region
- An ice cream factory damaged in the Zhytomyr region
- Residential buildings hit in the Sumy, Rivne, Kharkiv, and Odesa regions
- Critical infrastructure targeted in the Vinnytsia, Dnipro, Khmelnytskyi, and Zaporizhzhia regions
Emergency services are responding at the affected sites. Zelenskyy said dozens of people had been reported injured overall as of his morning update.
He thanked international partners who continue to highlight the situation in Ukraine and prepare concrete support packages, stressing the need for clear decisions on air defenses, energy assistance, and help covering budget shortfalls. “These are the things that are genuinely strengthening Ukraine today and helping our people endure,” he said. “Thank you to everyone who stands with Ukraine.”
