Driver killed as aerial attack hits WFP food aid trucks in Sudan
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has strongly condemned an aerial attack that struck two contracted trucks carrying its food commodities in South Kordofan state early on Saturday, 3 October 2026. One driver was killed in the strike.
The trucks were travelling from Dilling to Kadugli and were clearly marked as humanitarian vehicles. WFP said it is still gathering details on the circumstances of the incident, including the extent of damage to the food cargo. The agency extended its deepest condolences to the driverโs family, friends and colleagues.
โWFP calls for a prompt and impartial investigation into this incident and for those responsible for any violations to be held accountable,โ the organisation stated. It also urged all parties involved in the hostilities to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law, protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, and ensure the safe and unimpeded movement of humanitarian personnel and cargo.
The attack came just one day after another WFP truck struck an explosive device in Dilling after delivering life-saving food assistance. These incidents highlight the increasingly difficult security environment in Sudan and the risks faced by aid workers delivering support to communities in need.
South Kordofan has become a key battleground in Sudanโs civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict, now in its fourth year, has caused widespread displacement and hunger. WFP has previously reported multiple attacks on its operations in the region, including an earlier aerial strike in late August that destroyed more than 50 metric tonnes of food aid.
WFP reaffirmed its commitment to continuing the safe delivery of life-saving assistance to millions of people across Sudan who depend on humanitarian support.
