2 people killed in a prison shootout following a court ruling in Sudan

A shooting inside the prison in Kutum locality, North Darfur, left two people dead and three injured on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, according to eyewitnesses cited by Sudan War Monitor.

The incident occurred after a quarrel between armed men and prison officials following the trial of a Rapid Support Forces (RSF) suspect on charges related to โ€œnegative phenomenaโ€ (drug trafficking). Relatives of the defendant rejected the ruling. One relative opened fire on those present during the session inside the Kutum prison offices, killing and wounding five people in total. Authorities intervened to contain the situation, which caused panic among residents in nearby neighborhoods and patients at the adjacent hospital.

Separately, six people were injured in Kutum city when a drone strike targeted an RSF vehicle west of the Kutum market on the evening of Tuesday, September 29. Witnesses told Sudan War Monitor that two Sudanese army drones struck areas around and inside the city market at different times during the day and evening. The attacks focused on military targets, specifically RSF vehicles, with no civilian fatalities reported.

In North Kordofan, El Obeid (the state capital) came under intense drone bombardment on the evening of Wednesday, September 30. Field sources reported the attacks began around 10 p.m. and continued until about 11:30 p.m., killing five people, with casualty counts still ongoing. Seventeen suicide drones, including one described as strategic, were observed heading toward the city that evening, tracked from areas including Wad Banda and Wad Rabah.

RSF drones also struck the Wad Al-Tom events hall in El Obeid early on Wednesday morning (around 1 a.m.), causing significant damage. Three drones hit the hall. Its owner, Ahmed Mohamed Al-Tom, stated in a video that the venue is used for public conferences and has no affiliation with the government or the Sudanese army. He estimated the damage at 6โ€“6.5 trillion Sudanese pounds.

El Obeid has faced repeated RSF drone attacks this week targeting sites including Sheikan University College, the College of Developmental Sciences, the Olympic Stadium, and other facilities. Sudanese army drones struck a water source in the nearby Mazroub area, killing and injuring more than 26 residents.

The Sudanese army and joint forces announced they had taken control of the Kajm administrative area west of Sodari locality in North Kordofan on September 30. The same forces had previously retaken Sodari and Kajmar.

In related violence, five civilians were killed and eight RSF members died in clashes in Abu Qanabil village west of Sodari after RSF elements on motorcycles stormed the village and confronted local armed residents.

These developments form part of the ongoing civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces that began in April 2023.
