5 killed in gun battle as Lakurawa fighters attack community in Nigeria
The Sokoto State Police Command has confirmed an attack by suspected Lakurawa fighters on the Ungushi community in Kebbe Local Government Area.
The incident took place on Sunday morning, October 4, 2026. Police Public Relations Officer DSP Ahmed Rufai said the Divisional Police Officer in the area reported the attack, but full details were still being gathered at the time of the report.
Residents described how the attackers surrounded the community and opened fire. Local vigilantes engaged them in a gun battle and reportedly killed three of the assailants.
Two residents died in the attack: Ali Kaurar Yaku Marshall and Lukman Bawa, a welder. A vigilante, Mustapha Auwalu, was shot in the right leg. He was taken to the General Hospital, where doctors removed the bullet.
The fresh violence has heightened fear among residents, who are calling for urgent government intervention and a stronger security presence. They have also urged security agencies to intensify patrols to protect communities in the area from further attacks by armed groups.
The confirmation comes amid ongoing security challenges in parts of northwestern Nigeria linked to armed groups including the Lakurawa.
