4 killed as cartel gunmen murder a Guardia Nacional agent in Guerrero, Mexico

The Mexican National Guard (Guardia Nacional) has issued an official statement of condolence following the death of Soldier G.N. Eduardo Bustos Pérez.

In a formal message shared on its official X account on September 7, 2026 (referencing September 5), the institution expressed deep respect and solidarity with the pain caused by his loss. The statement highlights Bustos Pérez’s commitment, strength, and decision to serve Mexico, noting that he wore the uniform with dignity and honor. It extends sincere condolences to his family, colleagues, and loved ones, affirming that his memory will endure among those who chose to serve the nation. The message concludes with “Rest in peace.”

According to reports from Mexico’s Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA/Defensa), Bustos Pérez’s body was found along with those of three other people in the community of Plan de Lima, in the municipality of Juan R. Escudero, Guerrero. The soldier, who was originally from the state, was on leave at the time. Authorities have linked the killing to retaliation by organized crime groups amid ongoing operations against local criminal organizations, including “Los Ardillos.”

In response, Mexican security forces deployed an interinstitutional contingent of 284 personnel, along with aircraft and vehicles, to the region. Further reinforcements were announced, with officials stating the force would remain until those responsible are brought to justice. Related operations have led to arrests and seizures of weapons, ammunition, drugs, and vehicles.
