2 federal agents killed as cartel gunmen ambush them in Veracruz, Mexico

Two federal agents from Mexico’s Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) were killed and a third agent was wounded when members of organized crime ambushed them overnight in the municipality of Omealca, Veracruz state.

The attack occurred in the area between the communities of Paso Amapa and Río Moreno while the agents were conducting investigative work. Secretary of Security Omar García Harfuch confirmed the incident early Saturday morning on X (formerly Twitter). While Federal Agents of @SSPCMexico were carrying out investigative work in Omealca, Veracruz, they were attacked with gunfire by members of organized crime, Harfuch wrote. Regrettably, two federal agents lost their lives and a female colleague was injured; she is receiving medical attention and has our full support.

Harfuch expressed condolences to the families of the fallen agents and stated that an operation was immediately launched to locate and arrest those responsible. Authorities from the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA), the Secretariat of the Navy (SEMAR), the National Guard, the Veracruz state security secretariat and attorney general’s office, as well as authorities from neighboring Oaxaca, are participating in the response.

Local and federal sources indicate that cells of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) operate in the Omealca region. Later on Saturday, Harfuch reported that the ongoing operation resulted in the rescue of two kidnapping victims, who were found safe and unharmed.

No arrests related to the ambush have been announced, and the identities of the slain and wounded agents have not yet been publicly released. Authorities said the investigation continues and that those responsible will be brought to justice.
