1 police officer killed as he dies in the line of duty in Amritsar, India

Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Harjit Singh of the Punjab Police was shot dead in the early hours of Friday while on duty near the Bhagtanwala grain market in Amritsar.

The officer, a resident of Tarn Taran district and posted at the Gate Hakima police station, was deployed with a PCR (police control room/patrol) team. Around 2:30–3 a.m., two unidentified youths on a motorcycle allegedly opened fire on him. Harjit Singh sustained three bullet injuries. He was rushed to a private hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav confirmed the martyrdom in an official post on X, stating that the officer “has laid down his life in the line of duty.” The Punjab Police expressed solidarity with the bereaved family. Hon’ble Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced an ex-gratia amount of ₹1 crore for the family. In addition, an insurance payout of ₹1 crore will be provided by HDFC Bank. The martyr will be accorded full police honours.

Police have launched an investigation and are examining all possible angles. Some media reports mentioned an unverified claim of responsibility by the little-known outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban Hindustan (TTH); authorities have not independently confirmed this.

The killing comes amid heightened concern over attacks on police personnel in the region. In a separate incident the same night, a youth was also shot dead in Amritsar.

Punjab Police reiterated support for the family, with the official message: “Our prayers are with his family and relatives. #ForceIsFamily.”
