1 cop killed as an angry mob lynches a police officer in Gindabour, Ghana

The Ghana Police Service has arrested 36 people in connection with the lynching of a police officer by a mob in Gindabour, in the Sawla District of the Savannah Region.

According to a press release issued on September 17, 2026, by the Regional Police Headquarters in Damongo, the incident occurred on September 16 while General Constable Redeemer Owusu and his colleagues were on highway patrol along the Gindabour–Kenkyen community road.

A motorbike rider approaching the officers’ location suddenly diverted into the bush upon seeing the police vehicle. Suspicious of the man’s actions, the officers followed from a different direction and found him unconscious on a bush road. They picked him up and were taking him to a hospital when he died en route.

News of the rider’s death quickly spread, prompting a mob from the community to attack the officers. General Constable Redeemer Owusu was killed in the assault. Other officers sustained injuries of varying degrees, and the police vehicle was damaged.

The bodies of both the deceased officer and the motorbike rider have been taken to the Damongo Morgue for preservation and autopsy.

In response, the Inspector-General of Police deployed a team of investigators and intelligence officers to the area. Reinforcement units from Damongo, Bole, Sawla, Tuna, Kalba, and the Regional Intelligence Team have also been sent to strengthen security and maintain law and order.

All 36 suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations and will be brought before a court.

The Regional Police Command strongly condemned the attack on its officers and stated that those responsible will face the full rigours of the law.

The incident has heightened tensions in the community, with some residents reportedly fleeing the area amid the unrest.
