13 civilians killed as Boko Haram terrorists raid Madegowa village, Cameroon

Heavily armed men believed to be Boko Haram militants attacked the village of Madegowa (also spelled Madegoua) in the Makary subdivision of Logone-et-Chari department in Cameroon’s Far North region during the night of September 16–17, 2026. The assault, which took place roughly between 1:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m. while residents were asleep, left at least 13 civilians dead and one person injured.

According to local reports, the attackers stormed the locality and killed residents on the spot. The sole known survivor was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Local municipal authorities described the attack as a possible reprisal after security forces earlier seized a large stock of ammunition intended for Boko Haram fighters.

A provisional list of identified victims released by Cameroonian media includes: Abicho Abana, Djarana Gargua, Abichou Gargua, Gada Blama, Blama Alhadji, Hassana Isseini, Asseini Gouskouro, Abor Abicho, Isseini Mahamat, Amadou Samfo, Djidda Adoumbo, Hassana Mahamat, and others (some names appear more than once in initial reports as identification continues). The death toll remains provisional and the exact circumstances of the raid are still being clarified.

The attack underscores the persistent threat posed by Boko Haram and related armed groups in the Logone-et-Chari area and the broader Lake Chad Basin region. Boko Haram has operated in Cameroon’s Far North since 2014, causing significant loss of life and displacement over more than a decade. Local correspondent Amadou Dairou of Radio and Télévision Equinoxe confirmed the provisional nature of the casualty figures.

Security forces continue operations against the group in the region. No formal claim of responsibility had been publicly reported at the time of writing.
