1 civilian killed as drone debris falls over Taif province, Saudi Arabia

Debris from an intercepted drone launched by Yemen’s Houthi militia fell over Taif Governorate in western Saudi Arabia on Thursday, killing one person and injuring two others, the Saudi General Directorate of Civil Defense announced.

The official statement, posted on the Civil Defense’s X account (@SaudiDCD), said the shrapnel resulted from the successful interception and destruction of the unmanned aerial vehicle. It caused one fatality, two injuries, and material damage to several buildings and vehicles. Civil Defense teams in Taif responded promptly and carried out the standard emergency procedures for such incidents.

According to the Civil Defense spokesperson, the deceased was a Yemeni resident. The injured included a Saudi woman and a Pakistani resident, whose condition was described as critical.

Saudi authorities attributed the drone to the Houthi militia (also known as Ansarallah), which has been engaged in a long-running conflict with the Saudi-backed Yemeni government and has repeatedly launched cross-border attacks into the Kingdom. The Houthis have not immediately claimed responsibility for this specific incident.

The event occurred amid a recent escalation in Houthi drone and missile activity. Just days earlier, the Saudi-led coalition reported intercepting a Houthi drone that attempted to enter airspace near Mecca, Islam’s holiest city—an accusation the group denied. That incident prompted strong condemnation and warnings that the security of the holy sites represents a “red line.”

Taif lies east of Mecca. The falling debris marks one of the more significant civilian impacts from interceptions in the area in recent weeks, following earlier attacks that injured civilians and damaged property in southern and western Saudi cities.

No further details on the exact location within Taif or additional casualties were immediately released. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as regional tensions persist.
