2 people killed during violent community disturbances in Nchiraa, Ghana
The Ghana Police Service has restored calm in Nchiraa in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region after violent disturbances that left two people dead and 14 injured during a traditional Yam festival celebration.
According to a police press release issued on 5 October 2026, the unrest erupted on Saturday, 3 October 2026, at the four-junction area in Nchiraa. The Wenchi Divisional Police intervened and brought the situation under control.
Two people died, while 13 others — including a police officer — sustained gunshot wounds and are receiving treatment. (The overall injured figure cited by police is 14.)
Preliminary investigations indicate that the trouble began around 5:30 p.m. after the Yam festival programme had ended. Nana Tabiri Yaw II and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to the palace when a gunshot was heard, sparking the disturbances.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Wenchi Methodist Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Police have intensified patrols in Nchiraa, and the area remains calm. The Bono Regional Police Command has assured the public that every effort is being made to arrest those involved in the violence.
