Shopkeeper killed by gunmen on motorcycle over extortion in Ecuador

Residents of Block 10 in Bastión Popular, in northern Guayaquil, Ecuador, are outraged and concerned after a local shopkeeper was killed in an armed attack on the night of Sunday, October 4, 2026.

According to police information, the attack occurred around 10:40 p.m. as the man was closing his store. Two individuals on a motorcycle approached the premises and opened fire on the establishment. The victim was struck by six bullets.

He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Officers later confirmed that he died from his wounds.

Police sources indicate that the shopkeeper had previously been the target of extortion related to his commercial activity. Authorities are investigating whether the prior threats are connected to the fatal shooting.

“It’s not possible—he was a person who worked honestly. What happened is terrible,” one local resident said briefly.

The National Police continue to investigate the crime.
