2 men killed in Guayaquil rehabilitation clinic attack in Ecuador

Two people were killed in an armed attack on a drug rehabilitation clinic in the Esmeraldas Libre cooperative of the Las Malvinas area in southern Guayaquil, local media reported. A third person was reportedly taken to hospital, though police had not confirmed the injury.

The attack occurred at about 9 p.m. on Tuesday, when several armed assailants entered the building and opened fire on people inside, according to Ecuavisa and El Diario. The two victims died at the scene. One of those killed was believed to be a minor, with witnesses estimating the victimโ€™s age at between 14 and 15.

Forensic personnel later removed the bodies, while National Police and criminalistics units began collecting ballistic evidence and investigating the shooting. Authorities had not released the identities of the victims, a possible motive, or details about the attackers. No arrests had been reported.

The clinic shooting was one of two deadly attacks reported in Guayaquil that evening. About an hour later, a man was shot dead in a public park in the Pastor Vera cooperative in the Juan Montalvo area of northern Guayaquil; investigators reportedly recovered six ballistic items at that scene.
