2 soldiers killed as ELN rebels attack army base with drones in Ocaña, Colombia

Colombia

The Colombian National Army’s Second Division reported that the Trapiche military canton in the municipality of Ocaña came under attack on the night of September 4, 2026. Unmanned aerial vehicles fitted with explosive devices struck the installation.

According to the official statement, troops later moved to secure the perimeter and encountered members of the National Liberation Army (ELN). In the ensuing clash, Captain Marco David Pirajón Montezuma and Professional Soldier Joel Alberto Jiménez Jaramillo were killed. Five other soldiers were wounded and are receiving medical treatment.

The Army described the use of explosive-laden drones as a serious violation of international humanitarian law. Authorities have attributed the assault to the ELN’s Camilo Torres Restrepo Front. A Colombian Air Force helicopter was also damaged by shrapnel from the explosions.

The military has offered condolences and support to the families of the fallen soldiers and stated that it will continue offensive operations against illegal armed groups in the Ocaña region to protect the local population.
