1 Venezuelan killed as gunmen open fire outside a shop in La Serena, Chile

One Venezuelan man was killed and another wounded in a shooting early Saturday morning (September 5, 2026) at the intersection of Avenida Balmaceda and Calle Domeyko (also referred to as Domeyko) in central La Serena.

According to Regional Prosecutor Freddy Salinas of the Coquimbo Public Prosecutor’s Office, the attack occurred around 4:25 a.m. A vehicle reportedly opened fire on a person who was leaving a commercial premises (described in some reports as a nightclub or local commercial establishment) at the location.

The deceased, a 34-year-old Venezuelan national, arrived dead at the Hospital de La Serena with multiple gunshot wounds. The second victim, a 32-year-old Venezuelan, sustained less serious injuries and was later discharged. Prosecutors noted that the two men knew each other and may have been together, but the motive—possibly a settling of scores—remains under investigation.

The Organized Crime and Homicides Team (ECOH) of the Public Ministry, together with the Investigative Police (PDI), is handling the case. Investigators are securing the scene, collecting evidence (reports mention spent casings found at the site), interviewing witnesses (including the surviving victim), and reviewing nearby security camera footage. No arrests have been reported.
