Ex-footballer shot dead during a robbery at his bar in San Pedro Sula, Honduras

Juan Carlos Rodríguez Maldonado, better known in local football circles as “Piola,” a former player for Real España, was shot and killed on the night of Wednesday, September 23, 2026, inside his business in San Pedro Sula.

The 54-year-old was attacked at Bar-9, his establishment located in front of the Guamilito Market in the Guamilito sector. Preliminary reports indicate that armed individuals entered the premises and shot him multiple times. He died at the scene from the severity of his wounds. Another man was also wounded by gunfire in the same incident and was taken to a medical facility.

Early accounts suggest the attack may have been linked to a robbery attempt, with Rodríguez allegedly resisting the crime. Authorities have not officially confirmed this version, and the motive remains under investigation.

Rodríguez played for Real España, one of Honduras’ traditional clubs, during the 1990s. After retiring from professional football, he remained involved in the sport, competing in veterans’ leagues, including with Marathón Veteranos, and was active in San Pedro Sula’s football community. He was also a local businessman and father of four.

His death has caused widespread sadness among members of the northern Honduras football community. A wake was held for him at Jardines del Recuerdo funeral home and cemetery in San Pedro Sula.

Police continue to investigate the crime.
