2 killed as Russian strikes bombard residential sectors in Ukraine

Two people were killed and 28 others wounded in a series of Russian attacks on the city of Zaporizhzhia and surrounding areas in Zaporizhzhia region, Ukrainian police reported on 9 October 2026.

Over the previous 24 hours, Russian forces carried out 1,039 strikes across the region. The regional centre itself was attacked twice with multiple-launch rocket systems (MLRS), targeted by 12 drones, and hit with six guided aerial bombs (KABs).

On the morning and evening of 8 October, Russian FPV drones struck vehicles in Zaporizhzhia. A 52-year-old man was killed and a 45-year-old man was wounded.

An evening MLRS attack on the city injured 12 people, including three children.

In Komyshuvakha, a guided aerial bomb attack wounded a 64-year-old local resident. In Kushuhum and Sorochyne, drone attacks injured a 48-year-old woman and a 43-year-old man.

In the early hours of 9 October, Russian forces launched six guided aerial bomb strikes on residential areas of Zaporizhzhia. A 48-year-old man was killed and 12 more people were wounded.

Police received 209 reports of destruction and damage caused by the strikes. Officers, together with the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), are documenting the consequences as war crimes. Criminal proceedings have been opened under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (war crimes).

Police also evacuated three men from Komyshuvakha and Kushuhum over the past day. Residents seeking evacuation assistance are urged to call the special line 102.
