Armed attack on fishing boat kills 5 off Ecuador’s Puerto Bolívar coast
Five fishermen were killed and one injured in an armed assault on a fishing vessel in the early hours of Thursday, October 8, 2026, off the coast of Puerto Bolívar in Ecuador’s El Oro province.
Heavily armed assailants approached the boat in the darkness while the crew was working at sea and opened fire on those aboard. After the attack, the vessel managed to return to Posorja, in Guayaquil canton, the port from which it had originally departed.
Authorities said the exact circumstances and motives remain under investigation by police and judicial officials. The wounded survivor received medical attention after the boat reached port. Police officers later approached the vessel by boat to collect ballistic evidence and other physical traces from the crime scene.
The bodies of the five victims were brought ashore at the Posorja dock. A forensic medicine vehicle was waiting near the Port Captain’s offices to transport them for mandatory autopsies. Relatives and local residents gathered along the Posorja waterfront as investigators carried out formal procedures throughout the morning.
National Police are continuing inquiries to identify those responsible for the attack. The incident adds to ongoing concerns about violence and insecurity affecting fishing communities in the Puerto Bolívar area.
