2 people killed in a convict attack on guards inside a train, Russia

On the evening of October 2, 2026, a convict being transported by train attacked Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) escort officers near Murtazovo station in Kabardino-Balkaria, Russia, fatally shooting one and wounding three others before being killed by the remaining guards.

According to the official statement from the FSIN Russia Telegram channel, the incident occurred during rail escort near Murtazovo (close to Beslan) on a train carrying convicts, reported as the Vladikavkazโ€“Adler route. While one of the prisoners was being taken to the toilet, he launched a lone attack on an escort officer, seized the officerโ€™s service weapon, and opened fire.

One FSIN employee was killed. Three others were wounded. The attacker was neutralized by the remaining members of the escort detail during the ensuing operation. No civilians were harmed. Law enforcement was called to the scene, and an investigation is underway. The situation is under control, FSIN stated.

FSIN explicitly rejected circulating reports of a riot or hostage-taking on the train, describing them as false. Initial unverified claims from some Telegram channels and media had spoken of a broader disturbance involving multiple prisoners and a pulled emergency brake.

Russiaโ€™s Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case under articles covering theft of a firearm, disorganization of the activities of institutions ensuring isolation from society involving violence dangerous to life and health, and assault on the life of a law-enforcement officer. Investigators are examining the train car.

Some reports indicated the attacker was a man in his early 30s convicted on drug-related charges. Of the three wounded officers, one was described as being in serious condition, with the others in moderate condition.

In a follow-up statement, FSIN said it would provide all necessary assistance to the family of the fallen officer and to the injured personnel, and expressed deep condolences to the relatives of the employee who died in the line of duty.

The incident highlights the risks inherent in the escort and transport of convicts within Russiaโ€™s penal system. Further details from the ongoing investigation are expected.
