2 cops killed as gunmen shoot an anti-polio team in Nushki, Pakistan

Two police constables were killed in a gun attack on a polio vaccination team in Nushki district of Balochistan on Tuesday.

Unidentified armed men opened fire on officers providing security to the anti-polio team in the Jamalabad (also referred to as Killi Jamalabad) area. The slain personnel were identified as Constables Muhammad Yasir (or Yasir Ahmed) and Abdul Rauf. The attackers seized their official weapons and fled the scene.

The bodies were shifted to Teaching Hospital Nushki for formalities. Police cordoned off the area and launched a search operation. No group had claimed responsibility at the time of initial reports.

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi strongly condemned the attack. In an official statement from the Ministry of Interior, he expressed deep grief over the martyrdom of the two constables, paid tribute to them for attaining martyrdom while performing their duty, and offered heartfelt condolences to their families.

Naqvi described the assault on a team working to secure children’s future as a heinous and unforgivable act by “beastly elements,” stating that those responsible deserve an exemplary end.

Attacks on polio teams and their security escorts remain a recurring challenge in parts of Pakistan, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as the country continues efforts to eradicate the disease.
