Armed attack at baseball field leaves 4 dead in Valle de Santiago, Mexico

Armed men opened fire on people gathered at a baseball field in the community of Duranes de Arriba on Sunday afternoon, September 20, 2026, killing four people and wounding at least five others.

The attack occurred around 4:00–4:30 p.m. at the sports field near the limits with the municipality of Pueblo Nuevo, close to Gabriela Mistral primary school. Families and others were present in the area, with some reports describing a weekend gathering or game.

According to preliminary accounts, the gunmen arrived (reports vary on whether by vehicle or other means), fired multiple shots directly at people on the scene, and fled. The assault caused panic among those present and nearby residents. Two of the victims were found dead at the site—one beside the baseball field and another in front of the primary school. Other wounded people were helped by relatives and neighbors, with some transported in private vehicles to medical centers for treatment. Later reports indicated the death toll rose to four.

National Guard and Mexican Army personnel secured and cordoned off the area. Investigators and forensic experts from the Guanajuato State Attorney General’s Office (Fiscalía General del Estado) processed the scene, collected evidence, and transported the bodies to the medical examiner’s office for autopsies. No arrests had been reported in initial coverage, and authorities had not publicly identified the victims or stated a motive.
