Attacker shot dead during a panga assault on a police station in Uganda

Around 2:00 a.m. on 1 October 2026, approximately six people armed with pangas attacked the Bugoye Sub-County Police Station in Kasese District.

The assailants targeted an officer on duty and attempted to seize his firearm. The officer resisted and shot one of the attackers in the leg. The injured suspect fled the scene but was later found dead a short distance away.

Police have not yet confirmed the identity of the deceased. Four people have been arrested in connection with the incident: Irumba Simon, Kiiza Abson, Kadama George, and Baluku Lenaxi.

Officers recovered a panga at the scene. The body of the attacker was taken to a mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Investigations are continuing to establish the full circumstances of the attack and to locate the remaining suspects who fled. Police have appealed to members of the public with any information that could help identify or find those who escaped to report it to the nearest police station. They also urged people to report any suspicious activity linked to the incident.

The Uganda Police Force stated that it remains alert and prepared to respond promptly to attacks on police facilities.
