Police officer shot dead in a militant attack on checkpoint in Iran
An armed attack on a police checkpoint in the city of Rask early on Thursday (1 October 2026 / 9 Mehr 1405) resulted in the death of a police officer.
According to the Sistan and Baluchestan Police Information Center, Sergeant First Class Alireza Sanchouli, a member of the Rask County Police Command, was killed when gunmen opened fire on the Ahmadabad checkpoint at the entrance to the city.
Ali Khalil-Abadi, the provinceโs deputy governor for security and law enforcement affairs, said the attackers fired from the direction of a nearby river. Security forces stationed at the checkpoint immediately returned fire, forcing the gunmen to withdraw. He added that further investigations into the incident are continuing.
Police described the attack as a โcowardly and armedโ terrorist act and said efforts to identify and arrest those responsible are ongoing.
Sanchouli, who was married, was born on 25 Dey 1381 (15 January 2003) in Zabol County. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
