Jordanian retaliatory airstrikes kill 5 civilians in southern Syria
Jordanian airstrikes across multiple sites in southern Syria's Daraa governorate killed five civilians, including women and children, according to the region's health director. The strikes, which Jordan said targeted "terrorist hideouts," came in retaliation for a deadly attack on a church funeral in Jordan last week.
Daraa Health Director Khaled Al-Amyan told Syria's state news agency SANA that the victims included a 65-year-old man who died of shrapnel wounds after being taken to Daraa National Hospital. Two other people were wounded in the town of Al-Muzayrib and transferred to Tafas National Hospital. Syrian state media also reported that a strike south of the village of al-Musmiyah killed seven members of the same family, though this figure could not be independently verified.
Jordan's armed forces said the operation, dubbed "Jordanian Deterrence – Hamoud," targeted what it described as terrorist hideouts linked to those responsible for Friday's attack on mourners at a Greek Orthodox church in Karak, which killed nine people.
The Jordanian military said the strikes destroyed vehicles and positions and caused casualties among militants, without providing specific figures.
