1 cop killed as gunman shoots him during disturbance call in the USA

Claiborne County Sheriff’s Deputy Terrian Bailey was shot and killed in the line of duty early Monday morning, September 7, 2026, while responding to a disturbance call.

Bailey and other deputies were attempting to disperse a large crowd that had gathered in the parking lot of Michael Dean’s Convenience Store on Highway 18 near Hermanville following a local festival. Gunfire erupted toward the crowd shortly after midnight. Bailey was struck, transported to a local hospital, and later pronounced dead.

A female bystander was also shot and sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Bailey, 45, had served with the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department for six years. He is survived by his wife and four children.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is leading the probe into the shooting. The FBI is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. No suspects have been publicly identified.

Law enforcement agencies across Mississippi, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), have expressed condolences to Bailey’s family, friends, and colleagues. Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves called the incident a “senseless act of violence” that took the life of a husband, father, and hero, stating that those responsible will be brought to justice.

Community members have been invited to line U.S. Highway 61 to honor Bailey during processions related to his funeral arrangements.
