2 killed in Russian missile strike on residential areas of Kremenchuk in Ukraine
At least two people were killed and the number of injured rose to 41 (later updated higher) after a Russian missile attack struck residential areas of the central Ukrainian city of Kremenchuk on the morning of 7 October 2026.
According to Vitalii Diakivnych, head of the Poltava Regional Military Administration, as of 17:00 local time the casualty toll stood at two dead and 41 wounded. Earlier reports had put the number of injured at 34, including two children born in 2012. The toll later climbed further to 47 injured, among them the two children. Some of the wounded were reported to be in serious condition, and people continued seeking medical help after the attack.
The strike damaged five multi-storey apartment buildings containing a total of 431 flats, as well as 35 private houses. Six private homes were completely destroyed. Emergency services, police and the Security Service of Ukraine worked at the scene documenting the damage and assisting residents. Temporary headquarters were set up for people to report destroyed or damaged property and receive aid. Those left without housing were to be provided with temporary municipal accommodation.
The attack on Kremenchuk formed part of a wider Russian missile and drone assault overnight into 7 October that targeted Kyiv and multiple regions, including energy infrastructure. Ukrainian authorities reported that Russia launched dozens of missiles (including ballistic and cruise missiles) and Shahed-type drones. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the overall assault as one of the more cynical strikes of the war.
Rescue and recovery operations continued in Kremenchuk throughout the day. Residents were urged not to approach any debris and to contact emergency services if they found fragments.
