4 workers killed as weapons depot explodes near Sarmada town, Syria

Four people were killed and 10 others were injured in an explosion at a weapons depot near the city of Sarmada in northern Idlib countryside on Wednesday, a local health official told SANA.

Sobhi Assaf, director of the media office at the Idlib Health Directorate, said the injuries ranged from minor to moderate.

The explosion occurred in the Burj Elnumra area near Sarmada, according to SANA’s correspondent.

Walid Aslan, head of operations at the Emergency and Disaster Management Directorate in Idlib, earlier told SANA that preliminary information indicated the blast was caused by munitions.

Emergency teams rushed to the site immediately after the explosion to secure the area, assess the situation and take measures to address any potential repercussions, Aslan said.

Initial reports following the blast had indicated that there were no casualties, before the Health Directorate later confirmed the updated toll.
