12 armed suspects killed in Kimbe robbery shootout in Papua New Guinea
Twelve suspected gunmen were killed in a confrontation with police in Kimbe Town on Monday morning after robbing a retail outlet, Police Commissioner David Manning confirmed in a press statement.
According to the statement, the suspects attempted to flee in a stolen getaway vehicle, which overturned and rolled over. Suspects who were not seriously injured then drew their weapons and opened fire on police, prompting officers to return fire. Manning said police standing orders are clear that when a criminal raises a weapon, they will be stopped.
One suspect, believed to be the ringleader, survived and is in police custody. Police recovered stolen currency and a sizable quantity of weapons and ammunition from the vehicle. Manning said investigations are continuing and a report will be prepared for the Coroner. Police Minister John Pundari commended the quick intervention by Kimbe police, noting a similar armed robbery last Friday in which one gunman was killed.
