1 killed as a mayor's brother is shot outside a diner in Trujillo, Peru

Homero Valdemar Armas Villalobos, 35, was shot dead in the early hours of Monday in the California residential area of Trujillo, La Libertad region, Peru. He is reported to be the brother of Segundo Armas Villalobos, the district mayor of Pataz.

The attack took place at around 3:00 a.m. as Armas Villalobos was leaving a restaurant, when armed men approached and fired multiple shots at him.

He was seriously injured, taken to a clinic, but later died despite medical efforts.

• Police have not yet determined a motive and are reviewing security camera footage from the area; the recordings do not show the shooting itself but do show the victim already on the ground after being hit.
• Preliminary police information suggests Armas Villalobos had links to mining-related activities in Pataz, and investigators are examining whether this is connected to the killing.
• It remains unclear whether the attackers arrived by motorcycle, car, or another vehicle, and no group or individual has been publicly identified as responsible.

The murder comes just days after a quadruple homicide in central Trujillo, renewing local concern over contract killings and rising crime in the province.
