2 monks murdered and their bodies burned at a temple in Shahjahanpur, India

Early on October 1, 70-year-old Gopal Das, who had lived at the temple for nearly two decades, and his 60-year-old disciple Bihari Das were killed and their bodies burned inside the Shiva temple in Uttar Pradesh's Shahjahanpur district.

One body was still burning when discovered around 7 a.m., with the other reduced to a skeleton about 10 meters away.

A complaint accuses local resident Sumit, recently released on bail, of the murders over a dispute about temple land control; police have detained a suspect and sent bodies for post-mortem as the investigation continues. The peaceful sadhus' deaths have shocked the village.
