3 adults killed as gunmen open fire on family taxi over dispute in Syria

A deadly shooting on the evening of October 2, 2026, left multiple members of one family dead and others wounded in the town of Ras al-Maโ€™arra (also spelled Ras al-Maarra), in the Qalamoun area of the Damascus countryside.

Gunmen opened fire on a vehicle carrying the family of Mohammad Hussein Badeir as they traveled. According to reports circulating on social media and activist accounts, the victims included Mr. Mohammad Badeir, his wife, his sister-in-law, and one of their children. Other children in the vehicle were wounded. Some local accounts described the family as being targeted while returning from a wedding.

Official Syrian state media and security sources reported a similar incident, stating that Internal Security forces responded to a shooting that killed three adults and injured four children in the Yabroud/Ras al-Maarra area. The vehicle was said to have been carrying seven people (a man, his wife, his brotherโ€™s wife, and four children). The children were taken to hospital, with one girl suffering a severe head wound and transferred to intensive care. Preliminary information from security sources suggested the attack may have stemmed from a family dispute, and authorities said they had arrested several suspects while launching an investigation and maintaining a heightened security presence.

Casualty figures varied slightly across reports, with some outlets citing three or four killed and differing numbers of injured children. A photo circulating with reports of the incident shows a yellow car with its doors open and blood visible on the seats and interior, surrounded by people and emergency responders at night.

The Syria Justice Archive account highlighted the killing of the Sunni family and posed broader questions about security under the current authorities led by Ahmed al-Sharaa (formerly known as Abu Mohammad al-Jolani). The post asked why widespread weapons proliferation and armed chaos persist across much of Syria while high-profile weapons seizures appear concentrated in certain areas, such as the coast. It questioned whether the leadership is effectively preventing instability or, as critics claim, allowing or maintaining conditions of insecurity.

Syrian Internal Security forces have stated they are investigating the specific attack and working to identify those responsible. No official confirmation of a political or sectarian motive has been released at this stage, with early official comments pointing toward a possible personal or family dispute.

The incident adds to ongoing concerns about residual armed groups, proliferation of weapons, and challenges to establishing full security and stability in post-Assad Syria. Investigations into the Ras al-Maโ€™arra shooting continue.
