2 men shot dead by drug dealers near a funeral home in Ciudad Obregón, Mexico

Two men were shot and killed Sunday night near a funeral home in the Centro neighborhood of Ciudad Obregón, Sonora. The Sonora State Attorney General’s Office (FGJES) is investigating the attack and a possible connection to local drug-dealing groups.

The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Colima Street, between Hidalgo and Allende, a short distance from Funeraria La Missión, where a funeral service was underway. According to investigators, the victims had attended the service and were leaving in a white Ford Lobo pickup truck when they were intercepted a few meters from the funeral home by assailants in a white sedan. The gunmen opened fire with multiple rounds before fleeing the scene.

Samuel “N,” 32, died inside the truck. Carlos Antonio “N,” 39, was taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Authorities recovered 19 spent casings at the scene. State police and Mexican Navy personnel secured the area and established a perimeter. The truck was taken into custody as evidence.

The FGJES said one of the victims had ties to people and activities under investigation linked to groups involved in retail drug dealing. This forms part of the working hypothesis regarding a possible motive. Unofficial reports indicated the men were attending a funeral related to a young man killed the day before in Ciudad Obregón. No arrests have been reported.

Investigations continue to identify those responsible.
