Mexican soldier killed in Ario de Rosales armed ambush, two wounded

One Mexican Army soldier was killed and two others were seriously wounded in an armed ambush in the municipality of Ario de Rosales, Michoacán, authorities reported Saturday.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday near the village of El Ortigal, according to the state Civil Guard (policía estatal). The soldiers, assigned to the 5th Unassigned Infantry Company based in Tacámbaro, were on patrol when assailants opened fire with assault rifles from concealed positions in the surrounding vegetation.

Military personnel repelled the aggression, causing the attackers to flee. One soldier died at the scene, while the two wounded were transported to a military hospital for treatment. Their current health status has not been publicly disclosed.

Following the attack, security forces launched an operation across Ario de Rosales and neighboring municipalities—including Tacámbaro, Salvador Escalante, Turicato, Taretan, Nuevo Urecho, and La Huacana—to locate those responsible. The Michoacán State Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation.

Authorities have identified the region as a disputed territory among at least three criminal organizations: the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), the Knights Templar Cartel, and Pueblos Unidos.
