7 individuals killed in separate violent incidents across India’s Manipur
At least seven people were killed and a police station was reportedly set on fire in a new wave of violence across India’s northeastern state of Manipur, according to claims by former state chief minister N. Biren Singh.
Singh said the deaths occurred in a single day across the hill districts of Kamjong, Ukhrul and Kangpokpi. He also alleged that the Kamjong police station had been burnt and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the federal home ministry to intervene.
What local reports confirm
Indian media reports published on October 10 confirmed at least three deaths in Kamjong and Ukhrul districts, while other accounts put the number at five or seven. The New Indian Express reported that a Kuki woman was killed in Chassad Kuki village in Kamjong and two Naga men died in Ningchou.
The Economic Times reported that authorities in Kamjong imposed prohibitory orders around Chassad Police Gate Junction, while a 24-hour shutdown was called in Kangpokpi.
Police station fire disputed
Xinhua described the burning of the Kamjong police station as “reportedly” set ablaze, reflecting the unverified nature of the claim. Singh’s post made the allegation directly, but later reporting indicated that attackers allegedly attempted to set the Chassad police station on fire rather than confirming that it was destroyed.
Toll may rise
The death toll remained uncertain because local reports used different figures within hours of the violence. The Indian Express later reported at least nine deaths and around 14 houses set ablaze, suggesting the situation continued to escalate after the initial reports.
Manipur has faced recurring ethnic violence since 2023, and the latest clashes have renewed concerns about security in the state’s hill districts.
