Several gang members killed in Haiti during search for missing soldiers
The Salvadoran Armed Forces have confirmed that four of its military personnel remain unaccounted for following an ambush by armed gangs in Haiti, as international forces intensify search operations in the Croix-des-Bouquets area.
The incident occurred on Sunday, October 18, when the four aviation technicians, attached to the UN-backed Gang Suppression Force (GSF), were returning to camp in an armored vehicle. According to military statements, their vehicle was struck by explosives and gunfire in the Santo locality, setting it ablaze. The soldiers managed to exit the burning vehicle, but contact was subsequently lost.
The GSF has since confirmed that search and rescue operations are ongoing, supported by helicopter air cover, though efforts have been hampered by intense exchanges of fire.
During the ensuing operations to locate the missing Salvadorans, the GSF reported that multiple gang members were killed and others wounded in clashes with multinational troops. The force also disclosed that four of its own personnel sustained injuries during the search missions and received medical treatment.
Salvadoran military authorities have stated they are working in close coordination with international command to establish contact with the missing soldiers, while local sources indicate the area is a known stronghold of the Chen Mechan gang, also known as "Perro Feroz".
