Police officer killed as gunmen ambush his vehicle in Guayaquil, Ecuador

A police officer was killed after gunmen opened fire on his vehicle in the Nueva Granada cooperative, in Guayaquil’s Guasmo sector, late on September 20. Authorities said the attack occurred shortly after 11 p.m. and remains under investigation.

The officer, identified by local outlet Primicias as 26-year-old Jacob Eliezer Macías, was off duty and normally served in Rocafuerte, Manabí province. He was taken with serious gunshot wounds to Guasmo Sur Hospital, where his death was confirmed.

Investigation underway

Police patrols reportedly responded after hearing gunfire and found a vehicle with multiple bullet impacts. Acting Southern District Police Chief Jerson Flores said investigators are reviewing surveillance-camera footage and pursuing leads to identify those responsible.

No suspects, motive, or confirmed circumstances preceding the attack had been publicly disclosed as of September 22.
