Russian airstrike on Sloviansk apartment buildings kills woman in Ukraine

A Russian airstrike on the eastern Ukrainian city of Sloviansk killed a 71-year-old woman and left five people missing beneath the rubble of damaged apartment buildings, Ukrainian police reported Saturday. The attack occurred at 03:40 local time when Russian forces dropped two 250-kilogram bombs on residential buildings, injuring 11 people aged between 39 and 85, including five women and six men.

Rescue operations are ongoing at two locations but are being complicated by repeated shelling, according to the Donetsk regional police. Anti-drone battalion officers are providing cover for rescue workers and equipment at the sites. The strike destroyed or damaged nine multi-story apartment buildings.

Police said the final toll of casualties and destruction is still being established. The Donetsk region has faced regular bombardment throughout Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
