Boko Haram kills 5 security operatives in Nigeria's Adamawa communities

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents killed five security operatives, including four soldiers and one Forest Guard, in attacks on Tela-Bala and Guyaku communities in Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Nigeria.

The assailants stormed the villages on foot around 11:20 p.m. on Saturday, opening fire and forcing residents to flee.

A resident, Bala Guyaku, said the attackers rounded up the villages while most people were asleep and shot sporadically. He said troops later repelled the insurgents when they attempted to advance toward Gombi, the local government headquarters, early Sunday. The attackers also damaged a military armoured personnel carrier at a checkpoint in Guyaku but failed to seize or burn it.

Rufa'i Umar Gombi, a member of the Adamawa State House of Assembly representing Gombi Constituency, confirmed the attack and said he had been informed that four soldiers and a Forest Guard were killed, though the figures were not yet officially confirmed. A security analyst described the assault as a possible reprisal for a recent military operation in Hong Local Government Area in which troops reportedly killed six insurgents.
