10 soldiers killed as armed islamist fighters attack military base in Nigeria
Suspected Boko Haram insurgents killed at least 10 soldiers and wounded more than 20 others during a heavily coordinated night raid on an army base in Nigeriaโs northeastern Borno state. The incident occurred on Tuesday night when the armed militants assaulted the military base located in the Guzamala local government area. The attackers managed to overrun the troops, destroy multiple military vehicles, and set fire to portions of the nearby Mairari village.
The assault is part of a broader, 17-year ongoing Islamist insurgency led by groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), which have collectively intensified their operations in the region over recent weeks. Prior to invading the base, the fighters also seized more than 40 fishing boats in Tumbun Barebari, a nearby lakeside village. In addition to the military casualties, military sources and local residents reported that at least five civilians and one forest guard were killed during the raid. Military spokesperson Captain Mohammed Goni did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
