One dead following violent street brawl in Nice, southeastern France
A 27-year-old man was killed Thursday afternoon in Nice, southeastern France, following a violent brawl involving bladed weapons.
The incident occurred in the Louis Braille/Fenoglio neighborhood, just a few hundred meters from the Pasteur 2 hospital of the Nice University Hospital Center. The Nice public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation, particularly on charges of "aggravated murder".
According to Nice Mayor รric Ciotti, several injured individuals later presented themselves at the Pasteur hospital emergency department, where new violence subsequently broke out.
The hospital's emergency department was placed under temporary lockdown starting at approximately 4:30 p.m. local time due to the "exceptional situation," and the lockdown measure was lifted before 7 p.m.
At least five people were arrested, and the hospital's assault alarm was triggered due to the presence of an individual carrying a machete.
The circumstances of the violence remain "to be clarified," and the investigation is ongoing.
Ciotti went to the scene and expressed support for the medical staff, while thanking the municipal and national police for their intervention and for securing the hospital.
