Man shot dead after vehicle ambush in Costa Rica’s San Carlos canton

A man, believed to be around 28 years old, was killed in an apparent armed attack on Saturday afternoon in La Caporal, Aguas Zarcas, in Costa Rica’s San Carlos canton. The shooting occurred along the road connecting the area with Pital.

Authorities said the victim was traveling in a pickup truck when occupants of another vehicle apparently intercepted him on a section of road under repair. The suspects allegedly fired repeatedly at the truck, causing it to reverse into a fence.

The driver then got out and tried to flee on foot, but the attackers caught up with him about 15 meters from the vehicle and shot him several times. The Costa Rican Red Cross responded to the scene but pronounced the man dead after assessing him.

Officers from the Public Force carried out operations in the area, setting up checkpoints and searching for those responsible. No arrests had been confirmed when the report was published.

The Judicial Investigation Agency, known as the OIJ, took over the scene and opened an investigation into the killing.
